A large abandoned grain elevator stands in the morning sun in Katy, Texas. For a century, Katy, Texas was a major hub for rice production in southeast Texas. Another rice elevator about the same size stood nearby. In recent decades, Houston's growth west of downtown has exploded, and was recently identified as the fasted developing area in the United States. That encroachment has led to a huge reduction in rice production in favor of subdivision development, and the shuttering of grain operations, like this one. Also available directly through me as a higher resolution print than Fine Art America can produce.
Gerard has been photographing Texas and surrounding areas for over 30 years. The wide range of his work includes everything from the bright, colorful wildflower meadows of the Texas Hill Country, to the the stark winter beauty Brazos Bend, to the abstract architectural and industrial beauty of Houston. In addition to his fine art pursuits, he operates a full-time fashion studio. Once upon a time he was a lawyer, but he's feeling much better, now.
